Honeywell Thermostat Waiting For Equipment
I have three RTH9580WF thermostats. All three have good Wi-Fi Internet connections, all three are registered with MyTotalConnectComfort, and all three are displaying 'Waiting for update' where they should display the outside temperature and humidity.

I purchased the first thermostat about 18 months ago. It displayed the correct outside temperature/humidity until about three months ago when it started displaying 'Waiting for update.' It has been in that state continuously since then. I made no change to my registration information or zip code. As described below, I believe a software update introduced the problem.
I installed two new 9580's yesterday. As soon as I got these thermostats installed, connected to Wi-Fi and registered with MyTotalConnectComfort, they started displaying the correct outside temperature/humidity. However, after about 20 minutes, both of the new thermostats downloaded a software update and restarted themselves. Once the software update was installed, they started displaying 'Waiting for update' where they previously displayed the outside temperature/humidity.
So it appears that the software update installed on the new thermostats broke the outside temperature/humidity display just as it had done to the other thermostat about three months ago.
This is not a problem of having incorrectly registered my thermostats, and it's not a problem of needing to wait for synchronization. Honeywell has introduced a bug in the new firmware that has broken the outside temperature/humidify display.
If you have a RTH9580WF, please post a reply letting me know if your thermostat correctly displays outside temperature/humidity or if it displays 'Waiting for update.'
Thanks, Phil
I have installed the Honeywell RTH9580 Smart Thermostat, Works with Amazon Alexa successfully for over 2 weeks now, overall the installation was not too difficult but it did take some time since I needed to re-run a new cable (with 5 wires for the 'C' connection) from basement to the thermostat on main floor. Everything works 'okay' with WiFi / Phone app. working properly. After using for two weeks, I found 2 potential bugs that really annoys me, maybe you guys can help me or share your experience.

As of today, I have the latest Firmware and here is the setup:
Firmware (latest)
--------------------
Model: RTH9580WF1013GG
Software Rev: 01.04.01.00
Application Rev: 01.00.11.00
Configuration Rev: 04.00
Radio Revision: 01.07.00.00
Date Code: 1327
Furnace:
---------------
Model: Goodman 1 Stage Furnace (2 years old)
Type: Force Air
Setup:
------------------
- Schedule = Non-Programmable (manual adjust temperature)
- Fan Mode = Automatic
- Change over = Manual (I don't have air conditioning)
- Temperature Display = Celsius (C) since I am in Canada
- System Mode = Heat (I don't have air conditioning)
- Heating Stage = 1 stage
Now, here are the 2 issues, I can repeatedly reproduce the them:
Problem A: Indoor Temperature Display Issue (I am not talking about offset, it's refreshing issue)
--------------------------------------------
1. The furnace is not running at this point, say Indoor temperature display is showing 20.5 c
2. Adjust the temperature to 1 degree higher = 21.5 c
3. Furnace starts (both burner + fan are running - I checked in basement)
4. Wait for 10 min, now the 'Indoor Temperature' display suddenly shows 21.5 c matching the 'Set To'. But at this point, there is no way it reaches 21.5 c yet and both burner + fan are still running
5. If I go to Menu, change the temperature display from Celsius to Fahrenheit, go back to main screen
6. Guess what? it shows Indoor temperature = 69 F and 'Set To' = 71 F !!
7. Go to Menu again, Change the display back to Celsius, go back to main screen
8. I can see the Indoor temperature = 20.5 c and 'Set To' = 21.5 c !!
9. Furnace continues to run for another x min, of course it shows 21.5 c way before it reaches the desired temp.
I am not sure if a Celsius vs Fahrenheit issue, but it seems like in step (5) and (7), it refreshes the main screen. Another side note, I have never seen the 'Indoor Temperature' dropped by itself. For example, I expect in winter, the temperature would DROP 0.5c or 1c and then starts the furnace. If there is no temperature difference (Indoor vs 'SetTo') on the screen, why would it start the furnace? It doesn't make sense to me. I still suspect there is some refreshing issue on main screen regardless of the T-stat or whatever logic they use, but I do see the humidify % change quite often.
Further Proof: To prove that my case is valid, outdoor temperature is about -8 c now (very cold in here), current indoor temp showed 21.5c. Then, I opened the door and let cold air came in for 5 min. The 'Indoor Temperature ' display still shows 21.5c!!! However, behind the scene the thermostat knows the temp has dropped and it started the furnace. I do think there is a bug in firmware. It needs to display the Indoor Temperature in real time!!!
Problem B: Furnace starts again RIGHT after it stops
------------------------------------------------------
1. The furnace is not running at this point, say Indoor temperature is 20.5 c
2. Adjust the temperature to 1 degree higher = 21.5 c
3. Furnace starts (both burner + fan are running - I went to basement to check)
4. After desired temperature is reached, I heard the Relay 'click' sound on the thermostat
5. Burner stops and fan runs for another ~1 minute (this is fine, I guess this is by design to circulate the air)
6. Fan stops
7. Within 5 - 10 seconds, right away both Furnace starts again (both burner + fan are running AGAIN)!!!???
8. Interesting thing happens here, if I go check the thermostat and look for'System Status'. It said the following:
System Status: heat mode
- Heat Stage 1: Off
- Cool Stage 1: Off
Fan Mode: Automatic
- The fan is currently idle
NOTE: Both burner + fans are currently running!!!???
9. Wait for 1-2 min, check the 'System Status' again, I will see this:
System Status: heat mode
- Heat Stage 1: On
- Cool Stage 1: Off
Fan Mode: Automatic
- The fan is currently On
10. Now, wait x min (5 min probably) till the thermostat thinks that it should stop, then both burner + fans are off, until the next cycle kicks in.
I don't think this is part of the CPH (Cycle per hour), right? It is fine to stop/start my furnace for 5 times in an hour, but this immediate stop/start thing really bugs me. The user menu said it has 5 minutes protection delay before next cycle starts but I don't see that. I am worrying about this behavior will add a lot of stress to my fan and decrease the lifespan of my furnace.
I have an old 'TempRite' digital thermostat, and I didn't have either of the above problem. TempRite was not as pretty or user friendly but it gives me real time indoor temperature and doesn't do the immediate start/stop thing.
Do you guys experience these 2 issues? I am actually pretty disappointed with this Thermostat, since it doesn't even give me the basic function of a basic digital thermostat should do, while my 8 years old 'TempRite' could.
WiFi - Privacy and Security
---------------------------
The WiFi part is actually is the worst in terms of Privacy and Security. It doesn't come with any build-in web server!!?? In this case, I cannot control my temperature if I only have LAN access? My God, I cannot believe it tries to ping Alarmnet every 10 seconds to check for setting changes. Yes, it makes life a lot easier for non-technical people without opening port on router, but do you know this is an extremely high security risk and when you do this on the cloud? Firstly, all your daily schedule will be stored on their server, I suggest everyone to create a fake address on AlarmNet profile, in case someone hack into their database, they go to the wrong house to break-in. Secondly, if someone can do the Middle-man-attack or take control of AlarmNet web service, they can write a script adjust your temperature in middle of the night (fun!) or instruct your blower to turn on and off similar to 'Belkin WeMo' security flaw - a hacker can write a flip the switch at a very fast rate, which cause electrical fire. Exactly like Chamberlain internet gateway, good luck to those who are using it. I have disabled my WiFi after the update, well, it's just a pretty UI on the wall now.
I have contacted Honeywell customer support on the 2 issues I am having. If you guys have any experience or share your view, that would be really appreciated. That 2 issues do bug me, at one point I want to return my Thermostat to Home Depot. But before doing it, I want to find out if there is a reason/workaround/solution. thanks.
Html2pdf css stylesheet generator software. It may take several minutes to establish a connection with your network and sync with Honeywell. Once connected to Wi-Fi, tap Start Personalizing. Set the Location Name and set the Thermostat Name then tap Next. Complete your Profile to register your thermostat with Honeywell then tap Next. Wait for the registration to complete. The “Wait” message on a Honeywell Thermostat means the thermostat is waiting to activate the HVAC system. This is done to prevent damaging the HVAC system compressor. If the system is working properly, then “Wait” should disappear after a few minutes.
